Week 1: Advanced Harmony: Melody Writing
Ok... Melody Writing is probably the thing on the exam worth the most marks. Here are some tips:
2 Voice:
- If the key at the beginning is Major then, in the middle it should modulate to the dominant major.
- If the key at the beginning is minor, then it should modulate to the relative major
- The first line and third line end with imperfect cadences, and the second and last line end with perfect
- Don't forget your freezing line
- (4 voice too) leading note goes to tonic or down 2 steps.
- (4 voice too) All 7 chords prepared and resolved(go down one)
- (4 voice too)raise the leading in minor key
- Notes(top and bottom) if put together as close as possible has to be a 3rd/6th
- Pivot note flat second,flat six...etc
- (4 voice too) Use lots of V4/2 -I6
- Don't forget to give chords symbols for each chord(Root Quality is important for eg:Minor Key: ii*4/2 instead of II*4/2)
